The Exchange Youth Is going to the dominican republic this summer!
The Dominican Republic can be called a land of paradox, where you can experience both the beauty and the need within minutes of arriving. While the Dominican Republic is a land of great beauty, there is also extreme poverty. Over 30% of the nation lives in poverty. The economy is largely driven by the the tourism industry. The people who find themselves working in the tourism industry comprise much of the “middle class.” However, those who work in those positions often have to make sacrifices, spending weeks away from home at a time with only a day or two to be with family in between. The Dominican people have a strong culture and heritage. They are warm and welcoming, eager to share their culture with those who take interest. The dream of most Dominicans is to one day become baseball players who make it to the MLB.
